Creepy.
Look at what Google is selling the children.
"AIY Projects brings do-it-yourself artificial intelligence to your maker projects. The Google AIY Vision Kit lets you build an image recognition device that can see and identify objects, powered by TensorFlow’s machine learning models."Source.
Google is kinda creepy these days. Or maybe not so "kinda".
But at the same time I love that this sort of kit is out there for kids to learn from. I wish so hard that I could have done some of the kids robotics kits when I was little.
It's never to too late to start (smile). You can bring out your inner child.
I'm pretty chill with kids learning robotics even if they have cameras for navigation. This however is deeply creepy. Kids have no earthly reason for needing to learn image recognition. The same way I was critical of Google glass saying all it took was one creeper to take photos of a child - I am critical of this. It's the same thing, but you get your kids to do it.
The more interesting thing about this product is I asked the sales person about it and he was like - yeah I don't really understand this product. Not in the way I am, but he didn't even kinda know how to sell it. So like google glass I'm guessing it isn't going to gain much market penetration. But just seeing that Google tried is super creepy.
Google is really wedded to this cardboard box design though. They did it with VR and now this. The VR thing also failed.
DO YOU WANT TO BUILD THE BRAVE NEW WORLD OF AUTONOMOUS INTELLIGENT SURVEILLANCE?
ARE THOSE WORDS TOO BIG FOR YOU TO HANDLE TODAY?
PLAY AND CREATE FOR TOMORROW WHEN YOU CAN:
SPY ON YOUR WORLD SPY ON YOUR COUNTRY SPY ON YOUR NEIGHBORS SPY ON YOUR FRIENDS SPY ON YOUR PARENTS SPY ON YOUR SECRET GARDENS SPY ON YOURSELF ALL IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME!
Yeah, kids, ever watched old reruns of "Candid Camera"?
Well, this is "Candide Camera", and you're helping make it possible ...
You see, this is all a remnant of a German intellectual crack head, someone named Leibniz, a man so clueless that he thought the world around him was getting better all the time even when huge parts of it stayed the same or became even worse.
Silicon Valley still believes this Leibniz crack head philosophy because many Silicon Valley people received "top-notch engineering educations" in beastly dark satanic academic degree mills run by mathematician-philosophers who were actually "philosopher king" fools.
oh, I do lol, but if I'd had that as a kid I'd have very likely gone a completely different direction after highschool. Instead it was big clunky expensive stuff that you only got hands on if you had the right parents or the right really big expensive school. I barely knew it existed.

Next Google will create a self-driving "white van" ice cream truck. :-)
