You know how people put fake deer in their yards?

Well Monterey puts real deer. Yes, they are all over the golf course, but this is right downtown. And they are super not afraid of people. This one was about 10 feet from me. They walk the streets like the turkeys do in my town.

  1. Hello She Said, just don't try to pet them. Deer can use their hooves to hurt you. There are probably a lot of youtube videos available on the subject.

  2. No. I'm not that kinda girl. I went to get our of the truck to take a picture of one of the other ones and all of a sudden it was just there. I didn't move until it did. I don't trust wild animals. Not even the turkeys.

  3. You would enjoy Nara Park, Japan.
Lots of history, lots of deer.

  4. I would love all the architecture! But I'd have to hit Ōkunoshima first. Bunnies first. ;) Then deer. Then street food.

  5. Start using a tick repellent on a regular basis, even if you aren't the sort to go into long grass or brush. The higher your deer population the larger the tick population. Even in areas with well trimmed grass. Cities here are having bigger and bigger problems, and while other critters, including wild bunnies, are certainly a factor, the deer population is usually considered a major part of it.

  6. Ohhhh. Right. I guess I didn't really think of that. I was just kinda fascinated that people were okay with them being in the downtown area because deer eat everything. Right? If deer start eating my stuff we are gonna brawl.

So far in the burbs the mountain lions are keeping the deer out of the city for the most part.

  7. Bambi is always cute, dontcha know. Though I expect that the avid gardeners are less ok with them than the rest of the population. And that there's been a major upswing in the purchasing of plant deer repellents.

  8. Do they actually work? I mean, it's only a matter of time before they roam the downtown area.

  9. Plantskydd works very well in my experience, on both deer and wild bunnies. Downside: For the first 24hrs after application it smells puke worthy and my dogs want to roll in it. So whether you'll want to use it in close quarters to your house......

The less puke worthy ones I've found to be less successful, but my work sells a LOT of them and customer feedback varies. On the other hand if you can get in the habit of application BEFORE the deer decide your yard is tasty it might work better. In my case the various wildlife have been using my yard as a highway since long before we bought the place.
