I need a Sunday do over.

Today was basically like being in a washing machine. We had a huge wind storm blow in over night, and the wind was just howling and shredding everything.

We got our first power hit right when Mr S. was making coffee. This is where we wondered if we now need a UPS for our coffee maker. The power came back on for about an hour, then was out for about four hours.

Trees were down literately EVERYWHERE.

Someone downtown found out today they needed a new roof. Because the wind was strong enough it was literally throwing shingles off. And it sucks because you can't even wait until fall. It feels like summer right now, but the rain will be back soon and that storm shredded this roof. As much as I ate windstorms, at least I'm not that guy.

Not a great shot but this is a tree on it's side.

"This is where we wondered if we now need a UPS for our coffee maker."

You need a pretty decent surge protector for a coffee maker if you have a lot of power spikes. You'd figure that a coffee maker would be tough enough to withstand this kind of abuse, but it isn't.

I lost three Keurig machines in my office and home to power spikes, so they're now on 1450+ joule rated surge protectors because those are cheaper than shelling out another $600+ for the three machines again.

WTF do you think I was doing on this particular day? :-)

Replacing the one at home came first. :-)

There's no need to bother with a UPS for a coffee maker though ...

That's because you can have Japanese Emergency Coffee Rations in a can!

Just hit an Asian grocery and look for coffee in cans from UCC and Pokka.

The Pokka stuff comes in slim cans that I can stash behind the Keurig brewer along with a bunch of other supplies. The UCC stuff comes in short cans that I can stack stuff on top of if I need to, including the Pokka cans.

I keep a few days of coffee hits this way, and they are actually drinkable at room temperature. Every few months, I cycle out all of them and replace them with new cans since they only last about a year.

As for your loose shingles neighbor, you are about to experience the joy of living in Vancouver, but in California ...

Shit happens with everyone's roofs in Vancouver so often that many houses have blue rooftops not because of some Asian affinity with blue roofs, but instead because they have several layers of blue tarps that cover up the damage that the owners can't afford to fix repeatedly.

Welcome to your new Blue Tarp Neighborhood! :-)

  2. Coffee in cans? I'm not sure. I'd probably break down if I was really in a bind. But we did drive the entire State of Arkansas without finding one Starbucks. It also seemed kinda bougie to roll up and ask for two shots of your strongest coffee anywhere there.. They could already tell we weren't from around that place.

Starbucks (a.k.a. "Char$" or "Charbuck$") does coffee in cans now as well as coffee in glass jars, but it isn't as good and has almost three times the sugar.

So, yeah, Emergency Japanese Coffee Rations in cans are better. :-)

Arkansas! Come for the banjo pickers, leave in a hurry before the fucked up legal system swings a banjo at you!

Arkansas has an ex-girlfriend and a rifle of mine still, and they can keep them both as far as I'm concerned. :-)

Arkansas is on a list of states that I won't even drive through anymore.

Virginia's been on it for decades now, not because of some arrogant greasy caulk swallower (ahem) in the little-g governor's office, but instead because of the crazy messed up speed laws and other things the cops like doing that's entrapment-but-not-entrapment-according-to-Catch-22-special-duck-season-rules.

Given where I am, it's easier to drive north through Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky before cutting over through a few states on the way to New England, and the fact that I can avoid The Massachusetts of Dixie as well as Virginia that way?

I'd like to say that I miss the BBQ when I go around, but that part of the country thinks that pork is BBQ and they rarely do brisket right.

Besides, there are non-pork options available in Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky because they know deep down that beef's really better than pork.

*leaves that last comment there to burn all of those pork-loving Southerners who secretly love their ribeyes and beef tenderloins more* :-)

Joe Bob Briggs was timely as hell back in May, BTW. :-)

Good to see he's still kickin' it and making people uncomfortable by being the Texan that he is.

I remember when Joe Bob Briggs managed to shove a burr up Calvin Trillin's ass so far that he couldn't sit straight for weeks, and that's saying something because I'm pretty sure he's got wiggle room. :-)

"$803 per pound of gratuitous civet cat-fu. Dank gustatory aardvarking in a dingy ceramic cup. Drink it black like a psychopath, you've earned it!"

There you go, Joe Bob. :-)
