Puttin slippers on your rabbits toes.

Rabbits hate stuff on their feet. So, she put up with this much longer than I expected. As soon as I turned her over, they were off. Maybe tonight you'll get slippers on your rabbits ears. Because she didn't seem to mind that at all. Which is weird, because they don't like stuff on their ears either. (shrug)

Of Monsters and Murples.

I thought I'd give a post about Jasmine today. Normally I post more pictures when they are in this cute one year phase. However, she has not been cute at all. She's been driving us crazy. She is ridiculously strong willed.

The bunny we replaced her with was such a delicate rabbit for a mid size. It sounds stupid to say. She was born pigeon toed, so she always had sort of this light demeanor.

Jasmine is sort of more like.....a monster truck. She went through a false pregnancy. Which literally makes them the most aggressive animals on the planet. She gave Mr S. one of the most severe bites we've ever had. This is saying a lot because owning rabbits means you really get bitten all of the time.

They start ripping out their fur. In all the time we've owned rabbits, we'd never had false pregnancy. It was all I could do to not rip out her ovaries.

She has started evening out the past two weeks. Which is a relief. She had the kind of aggression you can't really tolerate for a lifetime. She would have had to have been neutered.

Sadly in my opinion, you can't tell if you have good breeding stock for about 5 years. And by good - I mean long living. I don't know that I will breed her. But I'd like to have the option.

Also, her ear never dropped. For a couple of weeks when she was younger I was sure it would drop. She is at an age now where we are almost certain it might stay up. So, technically she is a half velveteen lop.

Back story on why we call her Murple sometimes.

Murple in the house.

Today we were finally able to get our velveteen lop. I will probably have a pocket of rabbit stuff this week. Now that the whole thing is over. It's almost been all encompassing.

I didn't make any of the protests. I even scratched a car show today.

She does not have a name. And who knows when a name will come. Mr S. has been living out his boyhood naming conventions of old lady names. Or old poodle names. He wasn't able to have pets as a kid. So I've been scratching a lot of names like ClaraBell, Snickerdoodle, or Sugar.

I'm serious - every name out of him is a pet his grandmother could have owned. I of course want to name them stripper names.

The bunny is amazingly laid back. She traveled the hour drive mostly on her side. If they are stressed they will slipper up.

I've been joking we should just name her lotto. She went from living outside, barn style. To a brand new inside place with big screen TV. Carpeted floors and bottled water.

Yes. I give my rabbits bottled water. Whatdoya want to say about it?

We are calling her color Murple. Mmmmmm. Not quite brown, not quite grey. Sometimes she looks a little purple.

Relax.

Paisley has had an extended period of allergy issues this month. This normally involves disinfecting her chin with Chlorhexadine. Then the area needs drying.

This is where she lets me tie tissue bows around her muzzle. It is therapeutic. What? You don't believe me?

You have to admit it's cute.

I know this crosses some weird line about dressing up your pets.. but Tivo Antenna's don't really count. Do they?

BTW- she now hates those antennas.

More bunny pics here.

If you dont start letting me be a diva - I'm running away.

Several people who read my blog have made it known that I am light on bunny pictures lately. So... I will post a few over the next week or so. Then I have to take a bunny hiatus. I'm already starting to get creepy hits on the site.

To all those thinking about getting a cute little bunny for Easter. DON'T. They grow up fast, can often be very expensive and have complicated health issues. So save your money, and buy a weeks worth of latte's.

Examples of bunny health issues here and here. Everyone is still happy and kickin.

Evil Kirby Lu Hoo.

This girl thinks that if I can't see her - I won't know she is doing something bad like trying to chew carpet.

This is not an illusion.

Things have been crazy, and I haven't had much time to make entries. So I am going to just add a silly bunny event. My girl used to play in this tube when she was a baby. I was convinced she wouldn't be able to fit into it. She obviously thought she could, and managed to stretch her whole body to get into the tube.

I want to have your babies.

Last night something in my girls' head switched. She decided she knew me long enough, and that she wanted to have my babies.

I haven't really ever gotten why female bunnies try to hump on you like male bunnies. But they do.... and she did.

I'm sort of bummed about it, because I had this crazy idea I wouldn't neuter her. She is kind of too sweet. Which I really hate to gush about because bunnies are a very expensive pet to have.

Nothing can go wrong for years, then Bam. You are living in a cardboard box because they needed some expensive whatever, and the bunnies are nibbling the corners of the box.

Everything rational tells me to neuter like all the others.. but I don't really want to.

What are you looking at?

Do not do this to your bunny unless you have a dire medical need.

Our girl Jane Doe has glaucoma in her right eye (the one you can see in the picture). After a visit to the vetrinary eye specialist (with misc pokings and proddings), her eye became very irritated, and she started scratching at it. We needed to control her ability to get to the eye.

So the challenge was: how do you get a bunny to stop scratching an eye? People with dogs have it easy -- just put on a cone, or doggles.

Bunnies however have all sorts of engineering "problems".

1. Bunnies have no discernable neck. A cone would just fall off.

2. Bunnies panic easily. They can get really freaked out. They are very sensitive in the face, and they really don't like to feel trapped.

3. Bunnies will eat anything. Including hard plastic, like a dog cone. Including things that will kill them.

This was our solution. A Quaker Oats can. (well temporary solution - She got it off within 2 hours, but she seemed to leave the eye alone) We used the lower third of the can, and cut radial slits in the bottom to allow her had to pass through it. We also cut notches for her ears and muzzle. Not only are Quaker Oats good for your heart. (allegedly!) Their containers are completely edible (except the lid) by bunnies.

She was pretty okay with it until her mate started trying to "help her". First he started tugging on it trying to get it off her. Then he thought, "if your head is in there, maybe mine should be too". I didn't get pictures of that, because she started freaking out. After seperating her from her mate, she finally settled down. Begrudingly. And as you can see from the picture, we still had the directions to cook the oats.

Thrianta Baby.

An absolutely fascinating history about the Thrianta rabbit breed here.

Once brought to the edge of extinction by World War II after the Germans invaded the Netherlands. It is said they were smuggled back to Holland in empty coffins meant to hold soldiers for re-burial.

All of the rabbits you will ever see on this site are house rabbits who lead pampered lives.

Here is a picture where the sun is not shining through her ears.

When bunnies smile.

This is a completely un-doctored photo:

My girl loves carrot tops. I am not sure why she does this. We have other house rabbits and none of them have ever done this. She starts out really slow. Then works herself into a perfectly good carrot top froth. She starts eating them so fast, and gets so drippy, you can see the bottom of the photo she even starts dripping on the camera.
