You have to wonder if China will ever be the same.

I have to do some yard work today. Then I'm going to watch The Flu.

When the pandemic first started Mr S. told me about this movie because instead of treating infected people - they were just killing them. And now a LOT of people in China think this is actually happening. People are trying to evade quarantine because they just think they will be killed.

I guess last night they started killing their pets. There were a lot of stories of people throwing their pets off of buildings because they think they can transmit the disease. This morning the government said they were going to cull them.

And they started welding the doors shut of people who they thought were infected.

Zombie/horror movies can never be the same after this. Right?

  1. The movie Contagion is quite good. Might be a bit too realistic these days though!

  2. Oh. I will add it to the list. I feel like a lot of things are happening that movies didn't prepare us for. Something specifically designed to be absurd and suspend reality. I mean, I am not a prepper because I'm not living on MRE's - but none of those guys ever said - the masks are going to run out. Or that people would just start going crazy and throw their pets off of tall buildings. That is intense in a way you can't quite describe.

Not being able to control quarantine - that I completely expected.

  3. I agree about the pets. That's shocking! Thought it was the Onion at first. Things are getting strange. Are the officials really barricading whole apartment blocks to keep in the sick?

Am near the end of the movie The Flu right now! Quite different from Contagion, but eerily similar to what's happening in China in some scenes.

Nasty little "novel" thing gets around more than I do.

    What a slut of a virus. :-)

"I mean, I am not a prepper because I'm not living on MRE's -- but none of those guys ever said -- the masks are going to run out."

The preppers probably aren't going to get hit very hard by this, if at all.

It may be possible that they can dodge this in the same way that they can dodge the cold: take a high-quality multi-vitamin, add a low-dose zinc supplement to it (15 to 22 mg) with copper (2 mg), and take some magnesium and calcium in an easily absorbed form to complement it (such as a chewable antacid tablet that contains those).

And of course stay away from anyone visibly affected, preferably hundreds of miles away.

Using that dandruff soap only works for cleaning, it doesn't help when the stuff actually makes its way into your body.

But it's interesting to make a list of the observed traits of this "novel" thing, especially if these "inserts" are verifiable, because the list inevitably yields the question everyone's trying not to ask ...

BTW, ever watched "foreign MRE unboxing" videos?

Try not to eat the toilet paper, especially if you're going to make a YouTube video about your experience. :-)

    Also ... CHARMS ARE EVIL!
THEY FALL OUT OF YOUR MIL-STD MRE
THEN THEY MELT IN THE HEAT
    THEY MELT IN THE HUMIDITY
THEY MELT ON YOUR MIL-STD LAPTOP'S POWER BRICK
AND THEN THEY REALLY REALLY BEGIN TO SMELL
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU CHARMS?????!!!

    *ahem*

You can get Indian MRE meals at an Indian grocery, BTW, they're the same boil-in-bag packs that contain such things as sorta runny navratan korma and tasty but also sorta runny aloo mutter.

The rice pack MREs aren't really optional unless you really do like runny curry and runny everything else.

I got tired of Indian MREs for a long while after I ordered two dozen boxes of assorted ones and had to go through them before they all expired, but it's been a few years, so I may get a small number of these again.

I'd rather eat Chunky soup instead, especially since I don't need a "boiling vessel" or a "bivvie" for those.

But there's a phrase for movies like this one in the prepper community.

"Predictive programming", that's the phrase you're looking for.

The British TV show "Utopia" is like this too, but it's even creepier.

It's like someone made a TV show that centers around Jenny McCarthy's biggest nightmare and then let it go on for two seasons. :-)

It parallels pretty well in the beginning. Now I guess we get to see how well life imitates art. They started deploying some military last night and I saw more this morning.

It looks like they are pretty much like they roll up to your door and put a metal frame to block your door from opening. Example here. In some cases I've seen them putting tags over the doors so they can see if you have left. And of course they are arresting or threatening anyone who writes about it.

  6. The sad part about the whole mess, is that with proper medical care its less lethal than the yearly flu. Here in the USA I doubt we'll have any serious issues at all. 1: we have a greater "social distance" between strangers, making it harder to transmit, 2: we have a better medical system, and 3: we have better public trust in our medical system. China however appears to be delighting in screwing themselves.

But yes, the parallels between apocalypse stories and China's regular pandemics is amusing and occasionally scary!

  7. It seems to me that people always do irrational stuff when they are trying to not look weak.
