I guess the early models were right.

The weather nerds have been losing their minds over this storm since the beginning, but usually things change that far out. I don't think I've ever seen the spaghetti models agree so much. They kept saying please god - let these models be overcooked. But I guess that was not meant to be. Larger image here. You can see he posted this on Aug 31.

We all looked at those wind speeds (180mph)and dismissed them the same way that Harvey was expected to bring 50 inches of rain. We thought - that can never happen. The models always say crazy stuff.

Also some of the guys were predicting a sub 900mb storm. I forget the exact number but it was high 800's. It will be crazy if that happens.

  1. Uh, yeah ...

"BASSETERRE, St Kitts - WHILE citizens and residents in [Saint Kitts and Nevis] are bracing for the impact of Category 5 Hurricane Irma, news broke this morning (Sept. 5) that the Tropical Cyclone following her has been upgraded to a Tropical Storm."

"Reports from the Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicated that the maximum sustained winds are near 180 mph (285 km/h) with higher gusts. Irma is an extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane, the National Hurricane Center stressed, pointing out that some fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next day or two, but she is forecast to remain a powerful Category 4 or 5 Hurricane during the next couple of days."

Oh, but how bad could it be ...

"The High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police has made a decision to recall all Police Officers who are on leave and are in the Federation, due to the passage of Hurricane Irma. All officers are to return immediately to their respective stations, departments, or units and await further instructions or orders."

Hopefully they make it through, but I'm expecting this is 1984 all over again for the Leeward Islands, but much, much worse ...
