Let's just call it what it is - affirmative action for girls.

Google exec denounces employee's views on female workers.

When this article came out over the weekend I just had to shake my head. I asked Mr S. - this is just men sucking up to girls right? Like when they tell us that women are the smartest sex and all that shit they do to try to ingratiate themselves with us. Men, you guys do that. You say stupid shit to suck up to us and then women run with it.

I'm a girl and worked in tech when there were no women in tech. So I have a little to say about this.

First - quit bitching about sexism. It isn't right to be sexually harassed obviously. But men are men, and you will rue the day that this stops. Sure, even I find it annoying sometimes, but I'm getting older and I think - thank gawd I'm still being sexually harassed! I'd also like to say if you are bitching about this, you probably haven't been on this earth very long. You will encounter this your entire life. Find a way to better deal with it. Men are not defective because they want to find a mate. The only place to do that for a couple of decades now - is at work.

Second, I've known girls who have tried these fields. For some reason they don't seem to like it. And I think the lack of women is part of the reason but not the whole reason. I don't understand this myself. Working for men is way better.

I've gone through my whole life trying to find girls who are technologically curious, and you don't find many. It's so rare that when I do I'm sort of shocked although it is getting better. What that guy at Google said is completely correct. Women are not as interested in these fields and it isn't sexual bias. It's evolutionary pressure.

For instance, how many girls can/will set up a modern television? I'm not saying they CANT do it. But how many want to? Vs. having their husband/boyfriend or dad help them. Just like you can't make women want to work in construction just by pinking and shrinking tools.

Evolutionarily men have had to build things to survive and keep a mate. Women do not. I'm not saying women can't  do anything that men can except some physical stuff. But do they actually want to? From what I see, women just don't have the same technological inclination. You can't force someone to be interested in something they are not. But you can keep shaming men and making their lives worse apparently over a lie. Men are like the universal punching bag right now.

And the worst thing about it is - this is men trying to tell women how they should feel. To which I say - pound sand suck ups.

Let's get one thing out of the way: I hope this guy wins his wrongful termination lawsuit or gets a big, fat payout from Google to stay shut up about it.

The male engineers I know who are still in their fields pretty much gave up on hooking up with any of the females in their offices, let alone doing anything more serious.

One figured out that the Society for Creative Anachronism would help him meet more interesting women, and he married the cutest, nerdiest woman who looked good in medieval clothing he could find. Another started volunteering for charity construction projects and met someone who liked getting her hands dirty. Others took up distance hiking, whitewater rapids boating, IPSC shooting, pretty much anything to get them away from the people in the office.

Some of them took what was available -- one was happy to wife up the cute and petite stripper who had been hanging out with my extended social group. Another got interested in one of the female firearms safety instructors who was part of it. And let's not forget the habit of system admins marrying other system admins, just as long as they don't work at the same places -- it's so predictable that you can already guess the names of their future kids.

Now because of the fact that most of their social ties don't involve their work, they spend less time there and are less willing to put up with spending any time there other than what's absolutely required.

So yeah, if Google wants to create an environment where every male engineer will not stay even one minute past the point that is absolutely necessary, they're doing a damned fine job of it.

But it's OK because those women they work with will pick up the slack, amirite?

    BTW, this may amuse you.

SF Chron: "Rich SF residents get a shock: Someone bought their street"

Given some of the past homeowners, I'd charge $30/hour for parking or provide "reasonably priced" parking on contract at $10k/year. On the up side, they could guaranteed parking and valet services 24 hours per day. :-)

  3. As I see it..........I hope that guy doesn't have any "metadata" that google can blackmail him or his lawyers with. He should have a clear cut case because his career is ruined in Sillicon Valley.

I think google just single handedly crushed speech at that company. No one is going to talk about anything now for fear of being fired. Google has literally become more powerful than the government. It only sucks that it could take decades for them to spiral out.

I saw that story last night about the street. It was all over the local news. I'm not sure if that's a great deal or not. If the neighbors start bitching about road improvements they could bankrupt him pretty quick. So, it will be interesting how this turns out.

I'd try to flip that street before the rich people figured out a way to bankrupt me.

  4. Since women are not enough believers in equality to marry me and keep me home in the kitchen, I'm ok going back to patriarchy. Bad enough I have to compete with H-1's and greencard holders for jobs along with gotta hire 'vag' for government run affirmative action.
